When Change Feels Bigger Than You Expected
A new baby. Kids moving out. A career that's ending or beginning. A parent who suddenly needs more care. A move, a diagnosis, a retirement you thought you'd feel ready for and don't.
Life transitions aren't always crises, but they can still knock the footing out from under you. You might feel unsettled, unsure who you are on the other side of the change, or surprised by how much it's affecting you.
Life transitions therapy in Trenton with Marc Hoogstad at Acacia Counselling gives you a steady place to talk through what's shifting, before, during, or after it happens.
What Life Transitions Counselling Covers
"Life transitions" is a wide umbrella, on purpose. It's not one condition, it's the support you need when the ground under your life is moving.
Common transitions clients bring to sessions:
- Becoming a parent, or watching kids leave home
- A career change, job loss, or retirement
- Aging, health changes, or a new caregiving role
- A move, a divorce, or the end of a long chapter
- Just feeling like you don't know who you are right now
If the change is centred on a relationship, the couples counselling page may be a better fit. If it's centred on a loss, see grief counselling. This page is for the in-between, the shift itself.
A Conversational Approach to Change
Marc brings 20+ years of experience across individual counselling, family and youth work, and later-life care into every session, without ever making it feel clinical.
The first session is about sharing where you're at, not filling out an intake form. From there, sessions are shaped around what you're actually dealing with, whether that's a single decision point or a longer stretch of adjustment.
Marc works with adults and older teens (15 and up), in person at Acacia Counselling in Trenton or online across Quinte West, Belleville, Brighton, and Frankford, with evening availability Monday through Thursday.
What Working Together Looks Like
Step 1: Reach Out
Step 2: Talk Through What's Shifting
Step 3: Build Your Footing
What Can Shift Over Time
Transitions don't need to be fixed, they need somewhere to land while you work through them.
- Clarity about what's actually changing, and what isn't
- Language for the feeling, whether that's grief, relief, fear, or all three at once
- Practical footing during the upheaval, not just talk
- A sense of direction as the new normal takes shape
- Feeling less alone in a change that can be hard to explain to others
If your transition centres on your relationship, the couples counselling page covers that in more depth.

Not in method, the sessions are still conversational and client-led. It's more a focus than a different technique: the work centres on the change you're navigating right now, rather than an ongoing pattern or diagnosis.
